Paul Harvey, a London native from Islington with roots in Dalston, is gearing up for the adventure of a lifetime—all in the name of supporting those facing the harsh realities of homelessness and addiction. On November 14, he will embark on a 130km trek from Kathmandu to Mount Everest Base Camp alongside three close friends. Their goal? To raise funds for us at Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT).
Paul’s had a longstanding passion for mountain trekking. “I’ve always loved the magic of the mountains,” he says. Hikes in England and Wales have been a part of his life, but the Himalayas have always represented the ultimate challenge. Now, he’s turning this lifelong dream into a mission that will make a difference.
Why SCT?
Paul’s connection to SCT is personal. Having faced the realities of addiction himself, he understands the difficulties and stigmas that come with it. “SCT does a fantastic job,” he says. “I know from experience how hard it can be to overcome addiction, and the support SCT offers is life-changing.”
“The prospect of climbing to 5,364m and descending in 14 days with just my kit and supplies on my back is daunting,” he admits, “but it pales in comparison to the harsh realities many people face in their recovery every day.”
With the departure date drawing near, Paul describes feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. “I’m extremely excited but also a bit nervous,” he shares. “But knowing this effort will support SCT’s work makes me really motivated.”
