As 2024 draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on a year of growth, transformation, and community at Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT). From life-changing recovery journeys to meaningful community events, none of this would have been possible without our incredible supporters, volunteers, and everyone in the SCT community.
No one chooses a life of addiction or homelessness. These struggles are often rooted in childhood trauma, abuse, violence, and mental health issues. Combined with a lack of affordable housing, poverty, and an inadequate benefits system, many are left powerless and homeless. People lose connections with loved ones and their livelihoods, and tragically, the average age of death is just 45 for men and 43 for women.
At SCT, we passionately believe in the possibility of change. With the right support, people can rebuild healthier, more fulfilling lives. Through our residential and community-based services, we offer hope, dignity, and practical tools to support people in moving beyond homelessness and addiction.
Celebrating Recovery
This year, we proudly celebrated the achievements of those who completed our six-month therapeutic programme. We worked with 50 men in our treatment centre, providing them with the opportunity to begin their recovery journeys. Each graduate tackled the root causes of their addiction, built essential skills, and rediscovered hope for the future. From one-to-one counselling to group sessions focused on trauma, relapse prevention, and personal growth, their journeys were marked by courage and commitment.
Recovery doesn’t end with treatment. Graduates continued to thrive in SCT’s ‘move on house’ and our Training and Development sessions, exploring creativity in art classes, gaining life skills in digital workshops, and building confidence through woodworking, gardening, and creative writing. For some, these experiences led to higher education: one student began a BA in Music at Goldsmiths College, another pursued a BA in English through the Open University, and another started joinery at the Build Craft College.
Our Housing First service also made a significant impact, offering sustainable, long-term accommodation for those at the most extreme end of homelessness. For many, this was their first stable home in years. Having a secure, safe place to call home transforms lives, and we are proud of our team that supports people to make this happen.
Community and Connection: Highlights from the Year
2024 was a year of memorable events that brought our community together and highlighted our work:
- Hoxton Charity Shop Launch in May: We expanded our retail operations with the opening of our 9th shop, which not only raises vital funds but also prevents over 15 tons of textiles from entering landfills annually.
- Volunteers BBQ in the Summer: We celebrated our amazing volunteers with a summer BBQ, recognising their invaluable contributions to SCT’s success.
- The Big Sleep Out in October: Supporters spent a night under the stars, raising £24,873 for homelessness and addiction recovery. Their courage and commitment made a tangible difference.
- Art Exhibition in November: We showcased our students’ creative talents in an inspiring exhibition hosted by Canva. It was a wonderful evening celebrating resilience and artistry.
- The Big Give Campaign: During our Christmas campaign, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters, raising £64,442 and hitting our target within three days. Your donations are transforming lives beyond homelessness and addiction.
A Heartfelt Thank You
None of this would be possible without you—our supporters, volunteers, and community partners. Whether you donated clothes to our shops, gave your time, or fundraised through incredible challenges, you made a difference. Your generosity enables us to provide life-changing support and build brighter futures.
As we look toward 2025, our commitment to compassionate, long-term support remains unwavering. Together, we will continue creating lasting change and transforming lives. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Here’s to another year of making life beyond homelessness and addiction a reality for more people.
