On Saturday 9 May, Barbara Windsor MBE will fire the start gun for a race to three East London charity shops for London homeless and addictions charity, Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT). (1)

The event was inspired by two residents of Acorn House, the charity’s residential recovery accommodation on Shoreditch High Street, to help celebrate its 50 year anniversary in 2015.

The five mile fundraising event will start at 10.30am at SCT’s Bethnal Green Road shop and go onto the Roman Road and Chrisp Street shops before ending at the charity’s social enterprise coffee bookshop, Paper & Cup in Bow. (2)

The SCT Charity Shop Strut is sponsored by Fentimans Botanical Soft Drinks. A range of soft drinks will be available at each shop along the way and at the finishing line.

“When I found out my wife had cheated on me, I left our home that night. That’s when all my problems started. Just before I came to Acorn House, I felt hopeless. I was camping out around Arnold Circus and I just used to walk up and down the streets. I had no place to go. I look back at the last 9 months and I can’t believe how far I’ve come. I’m now studying for my GCSEs at Hackney Community College and hope to go on to study nursing.” said Matti.

“When SCT asked us how we should celebrate its 50th birthday, I wanted to do it by raising money for them so that they could help more people like me. I’ve spent 23 years in and out of hostels and mental institutions. SCT took me in and has offered me the opportunity to get my life back on track.” said Colin.

The event is free to join and SCT is asking participants to raise just £50. To sign up, go to: www.sct.org.uk/charityshopstrut, on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/events/734674179979305/
